BIndings was inspired by the will I described in the summary of The Cloud. In this piece, the chairs signify my ancestor slave owners who own those who work in the fields harvesting sugar cane in Louisiana. The tiny houses could have been rendered in drab colors, but it seemed to me that these people would have had colorful dreams and creative natures, though not the means to create a vibrant future yet (or maybe never, as these names come from 1829.) The initials to the right are cut from felt and are a few of the real first names of the slaves on the plantation. My 3rd great grandmother was a slave, Modeste Delahoussaye.
